Living with Diabetes at 39

May 20, 2013 will be a day I won't soon forget.....

I made a doctors appointment for a heal spur and ended up getting blood drawn for checking my blood sugar, liver and cholesterol.  All were bad.  My A1C was 8.1.  I had previously had gestational diabetes 13 years ago while pregnant with Megan but was able to control it with diet, so my doctor decided to have blood drawn to check and it was high.  He called me a couple days later with the results and said he wanted me to go back on the diet I was on while pregnant 13 years ago and come back in 3 weeks and track my sugar and see what my numbers were then.

I literally could not bring myself to eat the first 5 days after finding out I was now a Type 2 diabetic.  Checking my numbers, they were constantly high (over 200, below 120 is normal), so I refused to eat for 5 days.  Even without eating my numbers would not drop.  I ended up losing 9 pounds in those 5 days.  After talking to several people with diabetes, they told me I needed to eat to get my numbers to drop, just eating the right food and eating about every 2 hours, but eating less.  It has started to bring my numbers down, and when I went back to the doctor, I had lost 12 pounds and my A1C went down to 7.4.  The doctor told me he was not going to put me on medicine yet, and to continue to do what I was doing.  I went to see a dietician and did a lot of research online.

About 6 weeks later, I have lost 15 pounds.  I'm not sure what my A1C number is, but will find that out when I go back to the doctor in 2 months.

On a side note, I still have my heal spur :( which makes walking every night hard, but I push through it.

More updates (hopefully good ones) to come soon.

Update ....

I don't know where to start.

Malia is now 3 years old and will be starting preschool in the fall.  She is very excited and asks every day if she can go to school yet.  She had her preschool evaluation and they determined she will need speech therapy.  (Nic was in speech from preschool until 4th grade).  Malia keeps us on our toes and never quits moving.  She calls herself the princess, and loves to be wearing dresses and makeup and jewelery.   Potty training has not been easy and she continues to wear pull ups for now.

Nic has been very involved with sports.  He is now 11 and going into 6th grade.  Last year he played with the JFL (Junior Football League) and was on the 5th and 6th grade tackle team.  There were 13 teams in their league and they went undeafeted and won a trophy.  They also got to play in the St. Louis Rams stadium before the big game.  Nic really seemed to enjoy the 5th grade school basketball team. Last week we finished up summer baseball and he played 2 teams ....the league and travel teams.  His league baseball team finished 1st place in the tournament.  Nic was the catcher most of the time and did a very good job at it.  He can also move around those bases pretty fast.  I'm thinking he will be great at track this coming school year.

Megan has also been very involved with sports.  She is a teen now (age 13) and will be going into the 8th grade.  She also has her first job this summer babysitting.  After playing school softball and volleyball last year, she joined the High Impact travel volleyball team, that ended about a month ago and her 2 softball teams this year are about to come to an end next week (league and travel).  She has been busy with open gym volleyball also.  She made the cheerleading team for her 8th grade upcoming year and is very excited to get started in 2 weeks with cheer camps.  She had a rare opportunity to play with a softball travel team back in January that played at an indoor tournament in Duquoin. She has been doing quite a bit of pitching, which she has learned completely on her own, by practicing at it all the time.

As you have read, all I get done is traveling. lol.  In the past year we have done..
5th grade basketball (Nic)
5/6 grade JFL football (Nic)
Baseball league (Nic)
Baseball travel (Nic)
School Softball (Megan)
Travel Softball (Megan)
School Volleyball (Megan)
High Impact Volleyball (Megan)
Open gym basketball (Nic)
Open gym volleyball (Megan)

Almost all of them are traveling.
I'm so happy to see my kids so active and enjoying their youth.
